Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi died today at his own medical institute (that is, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences) which is located in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. On March 28, he was admitted into the hospital because he had acute cardiac and respiratory problems. He was in the ventilation support during the last days of his life. He was eighty six when he died. Visitors/devotees can pay their last homage to him at Sai Kulwant Hall on 25th and 26th of April as his body has been kept at the Hall.
Sai Baba was an important god man in contemporary India. He was born in a family which was economically weaker. Yes, he belonged to a backward caste community. He was named Sathyanarayana Raju when he was born. His performance as an organizer surprised everyone. He was accepted as a religious cult figure by the people from different cross sections of the Indian society. His name crossed the Indian boundary and he was well-known in the west too.
He had substantial influence among many important personalities of the globe. Scholars of numerous universities and leaders of different political parties used to visit him and his spiritual empire at Puttapurthy was a busy center of pilgrimage for years. He founded several educational centers and other institutions for the welfare of the people. He was like a fountain of inspiration for millions of his devotees and followers.
Hamid Ansari (Vice President of India), Manmohan Singh (Prime Minister of India), Sonia Gandhi (President of Indian National Congress) and Lal Krishna Advani (leader of Bharatiya Janata Party) sent message of condolence on his demise.
Sai Baba used to state that he was none other than Sai Baba of Sirdhi (another god man of India) in his next birth. He said that he would depart this planet at 96 years of age and that people would find him in the form of a new human.
Despite all these, it should be mentioned that his life was not free from controversy. His encounter with P.C.Sorcar (Junior) was not a happy affair to remember. His religious empire with the worth of more than Rs. 40,000 crore, perhaps, invited undesirable problems. Who will be the next in-charge of this huge property is a great question at present. At present, 6000 police forces have been deployed at Puttapurthy to maintain
